Havanese Breed Standard
*General Appearance*
Havanese are small dogs with immense charm! They are slightly longer than  they are tall and are covered with a profuse mantle of untrimmed, long, silky, wavy hair.  Havanese are natives of Cuba that have evolved over the centuries from  being the pampered lap dog of the aristocracy into the quintessential family pet that they are today!

When being shown in the ring their presentation should reflect their function-always in excellent condition but never so elaborately coifed as to prelude an impromptu romp in the leaves because Havanese are extremely playful dogs :)  They are known historically as a lap dog so they should not be too large or coarse.

Havanese have unique coats that reflect centuries in the tropics. Their coats are remarkably soft and light in texture.  Their expressions are soft and intelligent and they look mischievous most of the time :) Their eyes are large and almond shaped and are set widely apart. Their ears should be of medium length. Their nose should be broad and squarish and the pigment on the nose and lips should be complete, solid black for all colors except chocolate which should have solid chocolate brown lips and nose. A scissors bite is ideal and full complement of incisors are preferred.

The Havanese is the National Dog of Cuba and it's only native breed.  Havanese made their way into the U.S.A  around the time of the Cuban Revolution when a handful of them came to this country. By the 70s a gene pool was being rebuilt. All the Havanese in the world except for the ones from the "Iron Curtain" countries and those remaining in Cuba, stem from 11 little Havanese immigrants:)
